Stamps Collection

The Hobby of ‘Collecting stamps’ for studying history is known as ‘Philately’. In Greek language ‘Phila’ means love and ‘Telly’ means non taxable things. The person who collects or studies stamps is known as a stamp collector or philatelist.

Most of the people collect postal stamps. It is the world’s most popular hobby. This is the hobby of kids and kings and king of the hobbies. Collecting stamps not only gives fun and pleasure, it is an educative and informative hobby too.

Sir Rowland Hill is considered as the father of postal stamps, He advocated prepayment of postage based on weight, where as in the old system the addressee has to pay the postage.

The first postage stamp of the world ‘Penny back’ is issued on May 1st 1840 by Great Britain. The personality depicted on it was Queen Victoria; they were sold to public after 5 days.

India, issued its first stamp ‘Scinde Dawk’ in 1st july1852.

Independent India released its first stamp on 21st November 1947.This stamp contains ashokan capital on it .The price is 1.5 Annas

India is having largest number of post offices (nearly 1 lakh) in the world. India started postal saving bank in 1882.Postal index number (PIN) on 15th August 1972.
